Ric Flair denies road rage accusation
Charlotte pro wrestling icon Ric Flair turned himself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday afternoon facing allegations of assault stemming from road rage.
A Waxhaw man named Robert Ted Steele, 29, accuses Flair of yelling and cursing at him, grabbing him by the throat and kicking the door of his Toyota 4-Runner in the median of Interstate 485 the evening before Thanksgiving.
Flair, known to wrestling fans as "The Nature Boy", faces misdemeanor charges of simple assault and injury to personal property. Flair and his attorney said they will fight the charge.
"Ninety five percent it’s great being Ric Flair, five percent it’s not," Flair said after walking out of the booking room Tuesday. "But the people here in Charlotte in that system right here treated me like a million bucks. It's a great reflection on Charlotte and the city it is. They treated me with the utmost respect and it's not a bad deal."
When asked if it was road rage, Flair responded, "No road rage."
According to the warrants, Flair grabbed Steele by the neck and squeezed, leaving visible red bruising. The warrant accuses Flair of telling Steele he had his tag number and should knock the (we’ll say stuffing) out of him.
A second warrant charges Flair with kicking the door of the white 2001 Toyota 4-Runner and causing more than $200 worth of damage to it.
Flair and his attorney said he's not guilty of the charges.
